Phillips Coaching is pleased to announce former AFL champion and premiership assistant coach Nigel Lappin as an official ambassador, further strengthening the organisation’s commitment to elevating community football and grassroots coaching across Australia.
Lappin will play a central role in the launch of the Masterclass Signature Series, presented by Phillips Coaching in April 2026, joining Hawthorn senior coach Sam Mitchell as a featured ambassador. The initiative has been purpose-built to support community clubs, volunteer coaches, and administrators by translating elite AFL coaching principles into practical, real-world applications.
Widely regarded as one of the AFL’s most accomplished midfielders, Lappin was a cornerstone of the Brisbane Lions’ historic premiership three-peat from 2001 to 2003. Across a distinguished 15-season career, he played 279 games, amassed 5,911 disposals, and kicked 174 goals, earning a reputation for football intelligence, composure, and leadership at the highest level.
Following his playing career, Lappin transitioned seamlessly into coaching, joining the AFL ranks in 2009 and contributing to Geelong’s premiership-winning programs in 2009, 2011 and 2022 under Mark “Bomber” Thompson and Chris Scott. His coaching journey has since been defined by a deep understanding of player development, team dynamics, and high-performance environments.
COMMUNITY COACHING
The Masterclass Signature Series, presented by Phillips Coaching, connects community coaches directly to contemporary elite-level thinking while remaining accessible, inclusive, and relevant to grassroots football. Delivered via a subscription-based streaming platform, the series is designed to bridge the gap between professional and community coaching through high-quality, practical education.
Through the platform, Lappin and other elite ambassadors will share insights across key coaching pillars, including motivation and connection, developing a clear coaching philosophy, effective communication, building trust and culture, preseason program design, inclusive training environments, and on-field strategy. The series also features practical “moving the magnets” segments, supported by comprehensive drill libraries tailored specifically for community football.
“Elite coaching doesn’t need to be complicated,” Lappin said. “The challenge is making it accessible and relevant at community level. This series is about taking what works in the AFL and giving coaches simple, practical tools they can apply on a Tuesday night at their local club.”
Phillips Coaching CEO Simon Lloyd said Lappin’s appointment further reinforces the organisation’s purpose and long-term vision for grassroots football.
“We believe the future of football is shaped every week at local grounds by volunteers and community coaches,” Lloyd said. “With leaders like Sam Mitchell and now Nigel Lappin involved, we are able to translate AFL-level thinking into practical, everyday tools that community clubs can confidently apply.”
In addition to the Masterclass Signature Series, Phillips Coaching delivers high-performance academy programs for schools, community club development packages, community preseason programs, individual and small-group craft mastery sessions, school holiday programs with a club rebate model, and online education modules for aspiring coaches and athletes.
Grounded in Phillips Coaching’s Great Athletes, Better People philosophy, the Masterclass Signature Series aligns seamlessly with the organisation’s broader ecosystem, reinforcing strong fundamentals, leadership, and consistent coaching standards across the football pathway.
